Actually, there are only trace amounts of octane, or n-octane, in gasoline. Gasoline is a mixture of many different components, but the single biggest percentage goes to 2-methylbutane. The "octane" is really "isooctane", which is 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. The question makes little sense, since the efficiency of an engine is not computed from the masses of the fuel and the CO, CO2 and H2O produced.. Clearly, if there is not complete combustion, (producing CO2 and H2O) there may be many other combustion products besides these and CO.

Efficiency is a determined by comparing the amount of useful work done by the engine compared to the amount of energy in the fuel. The typical gasoline engine powered car is about 20-23 percent efficient. No more than 23 percent of the energy released in the combustion of the fuel ends up as useful work at the tires.
